PLAN were appointed to design the landscape for a residential led mix use development in the south east of England. An innovative asterisk shaped building offers 69 mixed-tenure residential units and 800sqm of commercial space at ground floor with refurbishment proposed for the adjacent railway arches providing studio spaces and bars. Landscape proposals include a sheltered courtyard garden for residents and new public realm fronting the main road and railway arches. The spaces around the building create lush, intimate seating opportunities for workers and passers-by.


Planting in these zones sit above an underground carpark and have been carefully chosen to provide an effective buffer between traffic and the building and create pleasant spaces to socialise or sit quietly away from the main pedestrian flow. Native and non-native species will add to an emerging picture of a greener urban realm which supports the local ecological network. Dense tree planting provides shade and shelter to pedestrians while ensuring the building sits within a green streetscape. A more open and flexible square with amphitheatre seating and street lighting allows people to step away from the street and enjoy the new opportunities offered by the refurbished railway arches.
