WEMBLEY EDGE/ LONDON

Type: Student Residential, Industrial, Workspace

Architect: BUJ Architects

Client: Eastwood

Status: Planning Application

PLAN were appointed to produce the landscape design of the Wembley Edge development situated on Fifth Way near Wembley Stadium. The development aims to make a positive contribution to the local community by providing much needed student accommodation, as well as creating job opportunities through light industrial floor space and a cafe. The development consists of a 5-15 storey building with new green streets and amenity spaces at ground level providing students and passers-by an enriching environment. Student amenity space at podium level create green spaces for rest, play and study.

Landscape proposals look to ‘break away’ the existing impermeable industrial surface to reveal remnants of the historic train line and the once present natural landscape beneath. A site-wide unit of 1.435m (‘Stephenson’s Gauge’) provides a structure and defines the linear dimensions of the revealed soft landscape and set-back spaces. New greening along Fifth Way provides residents, local workers and passers by some relief and shelter from the road.

The higher level podium landscape sits above the surrounding public realm in much the same way as the historic Never Stop Railway built for the Wembley Exhibition in 1925. The railway ran the length of the site at a raised level alongside the permanent line and used a novel mechanism meaning it never needed to stop to allow passengers aboard.
